How it started
From inspiration to practice.
Stylingmate started when my girlfriend was experimenting with bold makeup looks. Watching her try to learn new techniques made me realize how difficult learning makeup actually was.
Most tutorials came from short videos and influencers. They were great for inspiration, but not necessarily for learning. You could watch dozens of videos without really understanding how to recreate a look yourself.
I wanted to build something that made learning makeup more personal and practical. Something that could guide you through a look, step by step, instead of leaving you to figure everything out from a video.
Building the product
I’ve built most of Stylingmate independently, with occasional help from my girlfriend, mother, and friends.
For a while, we had a little routine. I’d spend the day working on the app, and in the evening we’d get together to try whatever I’d built.
It was a pretty simple feedback loop: build something, watch someone use it, discover what didn’t work, and try again the next day.
Those evenings helped shape a lot of the product, and they’re some of my favorite memories from building it.
Still building
Stylingmate is an ongoing project. I’m continuing to improve the experience, experiment with new ideas, and work through the engineering challenges that come with building and maintaining a real product.
I occasionally share what I’m working on, from product improvements to technical decisions, in my activity notes.
Bringing Stylingmate back
Revisiting the app, rebuilding parts of the experience, and preparing to put it back into people's hands.
